In India everyone knows about the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). Every aspirant of higher education in science and technology will have IITs at the top of their list, and they slog for a few years to get into any of them.

There are 23 IITs in India, and all put together have about eighteen thousand seats in the undergrad program (BTech), for which about one and half million aspirants take the entrance exam called IITJEE (IIT joint entrance exam).

India, the 5th largest economy ($3.73tn) in the world now, with a growth momentum faster than any other world economies in the last 2 decades, has taken the lead to build the south-south cooperation and is offering a big helping hand in facilitating the transformation, with its policy initiatives towards mainland Africa and, Middle East and North Africa (MENA). She certainly wishes to impact the education, skills, and healthcare canvas that form the bedrock of any economy.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), has been leading the list of institutes of eminence in Technology in India, for over 10 years and has been one of the tech-leadership churning engines of the world. As part of the south-south initiative of the government of India, IITM has stepped into Zanzibar, Tanzania with the government of Tanzania and Zanzibar giving every support possible, from giving land for the campus to funding the infrastructure development etc. I got to hear that they envision Zanzibar to be the education capital of Africa with a dozen world class institutions dotting the island in the near future, apart from being the recreation capital of Africa.

The IIT Madras Zanzibar (IITMZ) has started its operations in the academic year 2023-24, with its first undergrad (BS) and grad (MTech) programs in the stream of Data Science and AI, as this stream does not need large labs and workshops, and the world is undergoing dramatic upheavals stimulated and driven by data sciences. The institutions took off within a couple of months of signing of the agreement between the Indian government and the government of Zanzibar / Tanzania. We will see all other departments of technologies coming up in the next couple of years as the infrastructure of IITMZ develops in the next couple of years.

I had the opportunity to invest a few days at IITMZ campus in Zanzibar, interacting with faculty and engaging the students of the MTech program and a few from the BS program (its was a term-break and a few undergrad students were on the campus).

Take the CL Mock Test Series for IITMZ BS entrance test to ace the exam. kindly register here. We will inform you the moment it is launched.

The campus is an amazing one, both academically speaking, as much as, the environment for learning –

A. Since this is the first campus of any IIT beyond their existing main campuses, also the first one abroad, IIT Madras has a special interest to see it flourish, and the leadership is leaving no stone unturned to make it a world class campus, with high-tech classrooms.

B. The faculty has matchless credentials, highly experienced members drawn from the top-notch US universities, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) apart from IIT Madras and other IITs.

C. The faculty student ratio of 1:8 will be at the top of any university ratios.

D. Open, friendly atmosphere between the faculty and students being fostered, has created a mentor-mentee relationship and a family like atmosphere. These are early days though, but the leadership wants to create such a campus with camaraderie and belonging.

E. Academic rigor is high, but faculty handholding is high too as students share in the interactions with me. Each expressed about the practical approach to learning – hands-on work developing algorithms and apps for practical problem solving. Already a few projects have been unveiled and are implemented across the island state of Zanzibar.

Prof Preeti Aghalayam, the first Director In-charge of IIT Madras Zanzibar (www.iitmz.ac.in ), has a vision to make the campus a world class one in a few years, and is endeavoring to make it the first choice for every tech-education aspirant in the African continent. I can see the drive and perseverance in every initiative of hers, along with the entire team of IIT Madras.

CL Educate (www.cleducate.com), the largest listed entity in the space of education, skills, research and innovation in south Asia, in a partnership with IITMZ and Zindi (www.Zindi.Africa the largest platform for data scientists in Africa) has launched the Data Science AI Retreats (DSAIRe) to facilitate the CXOs of Africa take the lead to transform their organizations using data science, to become the next growth engines of the world economy. You may go through the detailed article here.

I took the opportunity during my visit to IIT Madras Zanzibar to interact with Prof Preeti Aghalayam on

  1. Her vision for IITMZ and as she sees the institution evolving.
  2. The culture and values that she wants IITMZ to hold.
  3. The Academic and Learning Environment.
  4. The kind of students that IITMZ wishes to attract from Africa, Middle-east and India
  5. The impact she wishes IITMZ to create in Africa.
  6. The philosophy and approach to the kind of students and learners IITMZ wishes to attract
  7. The selection process that has been designed to identify such students
  8. The entrance examination, and how aspirants need to approach to ace it.

Kindly invest time to watch this interaction. Invaluable for the aspirants of higher education and their parents too.

I am also carrying herewith with the interactions with the students, both BS and MTech, on the campus, who are talking about –

  • The world class programs, the curriculum and pedagogical approach.
  • How the approach to learning is very different and practical from what they all have studied ever before
  • The friendly and open environment at the campus
  • The stimulating multi-national, multi-cultural student environment
  • The kind of projects they are already doing and implementing in the state of Zanzibar.
  • How IIT Madras Zanzibar is going to impact African continent.

You must watch at least a few if not all. You may pick and choose based on the issues they are talking about…

Manas Rajan Pandya, student of BS (Data Science and AI) sharing his reflections about IITMZ

Dr Rajkumar Nagaiah, a physician with 25 years experience, now a student of MTech (DS&AI)

Shivam also talks about the project he is working on monitoring the environment in Zanzibar

Young Deendayal (BS) talking about how IITMZ is going to change education in Africa

I have no doubt that IIT Madras Zanzibar is going to make a huge difference to the African continent in the next decade. I strongly recommend all the parents of children who are in the senior-secondary, and also those who are looking for admissions to higher education this year, 2024, to seriously look at IIT Madras Zanzibar as a great choice to get into this very year. The last date for application has been extended to April 30, 2024, and the entrance exam is on June 9, 2024.

CL Educate has been mentoring and facilitating youth to excel in their education, careers, and life for almost three decades. It has been helping students to prepare for various entrance examinations and the interview process ever since it started. For IIT Madras Zanzibar entrance and interviews too it has initiated the process to help students excel in their entrance examination.

Mr. R. Shiva Kumar (an IIT Madras and IIM Kolkata Alum), Director – Academics, CL Educate, after looking at the sample questions and paper pattern of the IITMZ entrance of 2023 says –

“The paper is very interesting, yet easy and simple. Those who are comfortable with the basic concepts in their senior school Math, Physics, Chemistry and are reasonable readers, and who take interest in solving simple puzzles can succeed in the paper easily, unlike the IITJEE that IITs use to select their students in India.

This is a great opportunity for every student graduating from school and is aspiring for higher-ed in engineering and technology, to get into a world-class institution, like IITs, with a little bit of focused effort in the next 8 weeks. Just revise your senior schoolbooks, get your concepts clear, read newspapers regularly, and solve simple puzzles to sharpen your problem-solving skills.

CL Educate will launch a program in the next couple of weeks to help you prepare in the next eight weeks to get into IITMZ. We are in the process of creating a Mock Exam series to help you get used to taking the test in a simulated environment. If you take these mocks seriously and follow the analysis of every mock that will be put up on the LMS platform, you must do well in the IITMZ entrance examination. We will help you to prepare for the interviews too as part of the program if you get the call.
